Questions
Who has to pay advance tax?
Anyone whose tax for the year, after TDS and TCS, is ₹10,000 or more. Resident senior citizens (60+) with no business or professional income are exempt. Salaried people usually pay it only for other income such as interest, rent, capital gains or freelance work.
What are the advance tax due dates for FY 2026-27?
At least 15% by 15 June 2026, 45% by 15 September 2026, 75% by 15 December 2026 and 100% by 15 March 2027 (cumulative). Taxpayers under the presumptive schemes (Sections 44AD/44ADA) can pay 100% in one go by 15 March 2027. The schedule is the same under the Income-tax Act, 2025.
What if I pay late or less?
You pay simple interest of 1% a month: on each instalment that falls short (old Section 234C — no interest if you paid at least 12% by June and 36% by September), and on the shortfall if you paid less than 90% of your tax by 31 March (old Section 234B).
