Questions
What is the current Post Office MIS rate?
7.4% a year, paid monthly, for October–December 2026 (Q3 FY 2026-27). The government left all small savings rates unchanged on 30 September 2026. The rate on the day you invest stays the same for the full 5 years.
How much can I invest?
Minimum ₹1,000, in multiples of ₹1,000. The maximum is ₹9 lakh in a single account and ₹15 lakh in a joint account (up to 3 adults), counting all your MIS accounts together.
Can I close it early, and is it taxable?
You can close it after 1 year: 2% of the deposit is deducted if closed between 1 and 3 years, and 1% after 3 years. The interest is fully taxable at your slab rate and there is no tax deduction for the deposit.
