Questions
How is the retirement date worked out?
Under Fundamental Rule 56(a), a government servant retires on the afternoon of the last day of the month in which they attain the retirement age. If the date of birth is the 1st of a month, they retire on the last day of the previous month — because legally you attain an age on the day before your birthday.
What is the retirement age in India?
It is 60 for most Central Government employees and many PSUs and banks. Several State Governments use 58 or other ages, and some posts (teachers in some institutions, doctors in some services, judges) differ. Check your service rules.
Does this apply to private jobs?
Private companies set their own retirement age, often 58 or 60, and may retire you on your birthday or at the month end. EPS pension under EPFO is payable from age 58.
