Questions
How is step length estimated?
A common rule of thumb is step length ≈ 0.415 × height for men and 0.413 × height for women. For a 170 cm man that is about 70.5 cm per step, so 10,000 steps ≈ 7 km.
How are calories calculated?
With the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) walking equation, which estimates oxygen use from walking speed and converts it to calories (5 kcal per litre of oxygen). It is an estimate — hills, carrying weight and fitness change the real number.
Are 10,000 steps a day necessary?
No magic number exists. Studies link about 7,000–8,000 steps a day with much lower health risks, and benefits keep rising a little beyond that.
