Questions
What is a healthy waist-to-height ratio?
Keep your waist to less than half your height — a ratio below 0.5. From 0.5 to 0.6 means increased health risk, and 0.6 or more means high risk (NICE guidance, 2022).
Why is this better than BMI for Indians?
Many Indians carry more fat around the belly even at a normal BMI (the 'thin-fat' body type). Waist measurements catch this central fat, which is linked to diabetes and heart disease.
Does it work for everyone?
The NICE cut-offs are for adults. They are not meant for pregnancy, and very muscular people or those with a BMI of 35 or more should talk to a doctor about their risk.
