Questions

What do the five cron fields mean?

In order: minute (0–59), hour (0–23), day of month (1–31), month (1–12 or JAN–DEC) and day of week (0–7, where 0 and 7 are Sunday, or SUN–SAT). * means every value, 1-5 is a range, 1,15 is a list and */15 means every 15th value.

Why did my job run at the wrong time?

Cron uses the server's time zone. Many cloud servers and GitHub Actions run in UTC, which is 5 hours 30 minutes behind IST — so 9:30 AM IST is “0 4 * * *” in UTC.

What if I set both day of month and day of week?

Standard (Vixie) cron runs the job when either field matches. For example “0 9 1 * 1” runs on the 1st of every month and also on every Monday.
